Planning an African Safari

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or seasoned adventurer, our expert team can help you seamlessly plan your dream African safari. Many travelers trek to Africa in search of the “big five”: buffalo, lions, leopards, elephants and rhinoceroses. The chance to get close to these animals in their natural habitats is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and having the right information is crucial when planning. Below are some things to keep in mind as you begin your research for your trip.

Best Time To Go

Much of East and Southern Africa offer exceptional wildlife viewing year-round. That said, wildlife is generally easier to spot during the dry season when waterholes become a focus for activity. In Southern Africa, the rainy season (November to March) is good for birds but getting around the Okavango Delta is more difficult. This is also when visitor numbers and prices will be highest – something to bear in mind when weighing up costs and scheduling.

When To Book

Space is limited at the newer, smaller, and more exclusive safari lodges. Even the large, well known tented camps fill up quickly during peak periods. And if the camp or lodge is getting media coverage, there’s a good chance it’s already being booked for next year. Book your trip to Africa early, and you are almost guaranteed to stay at the places your heart desires.

Level Of Comfort

From rustic camps to high end lodging, there is no one “right” way to do a safari. There are many people who swear by luxury accommodations, and there are also many who believe the most authentic experience is pitching a tent under the stars. No matter what your travel style is, your experience in Africa will be unforgettable.

What To Pack

One rule: pack light. Most accommodations provide complimentary laundry service, so you can bring less clothes. Don’t forget to pack a lightweight sweater or jacket for early mornings and after dark when the temperatures drop. And remember, there’s a reason khaki, browns and greens are known as safari colors.

Trip Duration

Africa is bigger than the United States, China, and all of Europe combined. With so much to see and do, we suggest focusing on just one country and doing it for a minimum of ten days. Trying to squeeze in more starts to feel like the Amazing Race and there’s just no point in rushing what will be the most memorable trip of your life.

Expected Budget

An African safari costs anywhere between $125 and $1,500 per person per night. A budget safari averages $150 per night, mid-range $350 and luxury $750. The extreme top-safaris can easily go up to $1,500 per night, or more. It all comes down to your personal travel style.
