Arusha and Mt Meru

Destination: Arusha, Tanzania

Arusha is Tanzania’s gateway to the northern circuit of stellar national parks and the starting point of many a memorable safari. It’s also a large, sprawling city with all the contradictions that brings. The town offers a nice break from the rigours of life on the African road – it has excellent places to stay and eat and, for the most part, it’s lush and green and enjoys a temperate climate throughout the year, thanks to its altitude (about 1300m) and its location near the foot of Mt Meru.

Overnight: Arusha Coffee Lodge

Lying on the gently rolling foothills that cascade down from the ever-present Mount Meru is the bustling and vibrant town of Arusha. It is here on the outskirts of this town, hidden amongst one of Tanzania’s largest coffee plantations, that you will find Arusha Coffee Lodge, a perfect haven for relaxation either before or after any East African safari.

Day Two: Arusha – Tarangire National Park

Enjoy a morning walking tour of the coffee estate. After lunch, you will fly to Tarangire National Park. Both afternoon and night shared game drives will complete your day, with the opportunity to see zebra, flamingos and many other animals who call Tarangire National Park home. Overnight at Tarangire Treetops.

Destination: Tarangire National Park

One of the lesser-known game reserves in Tanzania, Tarangire rivals the Serengeti in its great number and diversity of wildlife. It is a good choice for travellers who wish to encounter more animals and less tourists while on safari. The Tarangire National Park is known as a wonderful birding destination and also features large numbers of game, particularly during the dry season, when the Tarangire River is the only source of water in the area.

Overnight: Tarangire Treetops

Centered about a Main Lodge – which itself encases a thousand year-old baobab tree – Tarangire Treetops comprises of 20 rooms all of which are elevated above the ground affording views over the tops of surrounding marula and baobab trees. With furnishings that create warmth and demonstrate a commitment to local craftsmanship, the ‘up-in-the-air’ experience is completed by the open-fronted room design affording views across the Tarangire plains from an expansive but private balcony.

Day Three: Exploring Tarangire National Park

Today you will enjoy shared day and night game drives, and a bush walk. A cultural visit to a Maasai Village is planned. Overnight at Tarangire Treetops.
