Mt. Kenya Trek
Day One – Arrive Nairobi
Following your flight Odyssey Safari staff will greet you at the airport and load your bags for transport to the Safari Park Hotel. Once you are settled in you may select an optional activity or simply relax at the camp for the trip ahead. Some of the possible optional activities include: Bomas of Kenya, Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Karen Blixen Museum, Tour of Downtown Nairobi, National Museum, or Langata Giraffe Center.
Overnight: Safari Park Hotel & Casino
Day Two – Nairobi – Nanyuki – Mt. Kenya – Old Moses
Transfer from Nairobi to Nanyuki for lunch. Afterwards cross the equator en-route, to the Sirimon Park Gate, at 2,650m then trek through forest, bamboo, rosewood and heather zones to our Old Moses Mountain Hut/Camp. At 3,300m for dinner and overnight.
Day Three – Old Moses Camp – Shipton’s Camp
SHIPTON’S CAMP (4,200m.) Approx.14Kms/ 7-8hrs.Ascent: +900m.
Habitat: Moorland zone
Trek to Shipton’s camp. The hike is awesome but a good test on individual endurance. The exciting trek up takes you across hills and valleys through the entire stretch of the sprawling moorlands where you see several unique and interesting plants and animals including the giant groundsels, lobelias and the mountain rock hyrax. Dinner and overnight at camp.
Day Four – Shipton’s Camp – Summit – Met Station Camp
PT. LENANA (4,985m.) – MACKINDER’S CAMP (4,300m.)
Trek via Pt. Lenana to Mackinder’s Camp (4,300m). Approx. 7.5 kms / 7hrs. Ascent: 749m Descent: -685m
Predawn start (3am) for the summit attempt. Up steep screes and a bare rocky track to reach the hikers summit, Pt. Lenana in time for sunrise – Kilimanjaro is usually visible 340kms to the south. The climb is on frozen scree going through the Harris tarn and requiring some scrambling on final stretch to reach the summit. This is unavoidable on any route but we aim to reach the summit and witness the magical sunrise over the equator at 6.30am This hike is about 4 and half hours hike through some of the most spectacular sceneries like Gorges valley the Halls Tarns and the Lake Elies at a far distance. Overnight at Mintos Campisite.
Day Five – Mintos – Meru – Mt Kenya bandas
Today the hike is About 5 – 6 hours. This area has spectacular views down into the Gorges valley with Lake Michaelson and Vivienne falls, and across on the other side you can see Ithanguni peak, Rotundu peaks and the Giant Flat top table Mountain. Lunch will be at road head. Dinner and overnight at Chogaria Bandas.
Day 6 – Chogoria Gate to Chogoria Town – Nairobi
About 6 – 8 hours, on dirt roads through a thick bamboo forest and tropical forest. The
forest is really beautiful with chances of seeing wildlife and Columbus monkeys. Transfer to Nairobi arriving late afternoon.32kms or walk half way to take 4×4 the rest of half of dirt road. Lunch at Chogoria Town 4hr drive to Nairobi for dinner and overnight at Safari Park Hotel.
Day Seven – Nairobi
After breakfast, relax at the hotel famous gardens, Lunch followed at carnivore afterwards drop off at the airport for your outbound flight.
