A Day On Safari

Africa is a land of adventure, and there's no better way to explore it than on a safari. You'll wake up early to catch the animals at their most active, then enjoy some downtime in camp during the heat of the day. In the late afternoon, you'll head out again for another game drive. The following timeline is what you can expect on a typical day on safari. However, no two days are alike in the bush, so you never know what you'll see next!

5:30 a.m. – 6:00 a.m.

If you haven’t already woken up to the sounds of the African bush springing to life, a warm wakeup call is all it will take to make sure you are ready to embark on a morning game drive. Typically, you will either be met by your guide with an assortment of various light snacks and drinks or in one of the common areas of your camp. There’s nothing quite like witnessing the magic of Africa to start out your morning adventure. Get your gear ready and load up into your vehicle for an exciting day exploring the wilds of Africa.

6:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.

As you make your way through the African bush, you’ll notice in the early morning that wildlife begins to make their first move as predators return from a night of hunting. Make sure to keep your camera ready as you search for the big five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. You’ll also notice a number of other game including zebras, giraffe, hippos, impala and more. A quick stop at a scenic spot provides ample opportunities to stretch your legs, have a snack, and chat with your guide to learn more about the local flora and fauna.

9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

After your morning game drive, you’ll return to your lodge or camp for breakfast. Breakfasts are usually fruit juice, toast and bread and cakes, fruit and sometimes yogurts and cereals. This also includes usually something cooked which varies from eggs right up to a full English breakfast, omelets and pancakes. But the options typically depend on where you are staying. Once finished, sit back and relax at your camp or take part in one of the activities on offer. Depending on your accommodation, you’ll have a number of choices of how to finish out your morning.

12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Get your appetite ready as lunch is served. You can expect soup, salad, rice, green bananas and sometimes potatoes and occasionally pasta, bread, often some curried or indian type of meat or veggie dishes, grilled meat or fish, often typically stir-fry type dishes. After, it’s time to relax before embarking on your afternoon game drive. Take a dip in the pool to cool off, read a book overlooking scenic views, or maybe grab a quick nap before your adventure continues. If your accomidation has more activities on offer, make to ask ahead of time to plan your afternoon out accordingly.

4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

As wildlife wakes up from their naps and predators begin their next hunt, your afternoon game drive provides you with a number of opportunities to witness the vibrant wildlife in action. Perhaps you’ll watch a pride of lions as they stalk their prey or maybe hear the hammering of hooves from elephants as they traverse the vast plains in front of you. You might even be lucky enough to see some of the most sought after animals like the elusive leopard. As the sun begins to set, your guide will bring you to a scenic spot where your sundowner aka ‘happy hour’ will be prepared as you take in the dramatic landscapes before you.

7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

As your afternoon game drive comes to an end, you’ll return to your lodge or camp to freshen up before dinner is served typically in an open “boma” under the stars. Dinner is usually three courses comprising of: various soups, main entrees, and pudding for dessert. There will be a variety during your stay ranging from meat, fish and pasta dishes served with assorted vegetables and sauces. Once finished, make your way around the campfire and share the day’s adventures before making your way back to your room to sleep under the African night sky before returning for another day of unforgettable experiences while on safari in Africa.
